NEW TREND IN SALON INTERIORS

NEW TREND IN SALON INTERIORS

The Greeks were very into trimming their beards and in sequence the first barbershops opened. Ticinius Mena, a Roman senator returned from a Greek colony in Sicily In 296 BC where barbershops were commonplace and brought the custom back to Rome. Romans were serious about their appearances and their version of the “tonstinae” (barbershop) was born. Since then these shops are constantly in existence and in today’s era we call them SALON. A place where one can groom him/herself. Similarly design trends of salon Interiors have also changed in every era. When a SALON embarks on a new build out or renovation, the owner, designer and architect strive to incorporate the latest and emerging trends into a space that should stand them in good stead for the next several years. Either today or tomorrow, anything which is low on maintenance and high on appeal is a trend in interiors of a salon. A commercial space like salon should always be designed, keeping in mind about its maintenance aspects. Designs which involve a lot of cleaning and maintenance works should be avoided. Today there is a dramatic increase in the number of salons, building treatment rooms and this is a trend that is going to continue as it’s an added source of revenue. The trend forced us to use LED lighting that is task specific such as special LED lights for waxing rooms and soothing dimmable LEDs for massage rooms. Also these rooms should be soothing and relaxing so as to provide maximum comfort to the client. Another trend emerging today is of variable designs for all rooms. Since salons have repeat clientele so variable designs in all rooms help customer feel new and different every time he comes in. Similar design for all rooms leads to boredom and force client to search for a new salon. Use of Lacquered glasses in these rooms is suggestive, as these rooms are generally small in size. Glass gives an impression of bigger room. Many owners prefer putting their logo or salon name on a wall behind the reception desk and then focusing light similar to a spotlight on it so that it really stands out and gets noticed from both inside and outside the salon. We are seeing a trend towards having that spotlight on the logo illuminated 24x7 so no matter what time someone is traveling past the salon the name/logo is seen. This is a smart and inexpensive way to market the salon. We recently did a salon that put their logo in the tile flooring of the circular hallway leading into the spa. It created a very dramatic look and was a clever way to show their brand. The technology that has the best chance of becoming mainstream is OLEDs. These are organic light emitting diodes. Unlike LEDs, OLEDs are extremely thin organic compounds that could turn an entire wall or ceiling into alight. The more probable use of OLEDs in the near future will be in the decorative aspect as light panels using OLEDs will be able to be bent or shaped while emitting a glow of light. The trend that will definitely continue to grow is the movement towards energy efficiency. More and more salons are understanding the benefits of replacing inefficient lighting with technologically advanced LEDs and we are confident that we will not see any slowing in the advancement of that movement. Our current 18W LED is the equivalent to 75-90Wof Halogen lighting power while delivering superior tone and color. The trend is to build a clean, neat professional salon, which is wonderfully lit to show off the color work. The Full Spectrum LED lighting is rapidly replacing the green tinted fluorescent lighting and the red tinted halogen and incandescent lighting. I generally suggest mixing the 3400-3500 Kelvin Spectra lights SL4000 LED lights over the color bar and cutting stations so that the hair stylists can see their work in sunlight type light. Although light temperature should be kept totally warm while designing a makeup or bridal area. I recommend light-colored walls that help reflect light, thereby reducing shadows and increasing the overall light in the salon. But these light colored walls should be made out of materials which are easy to clean. Music has become the soul for any salon. Very good quality sound system, producing clear but not loud sounds should be used. Music plays the most important part while creating a good ambience for any salon. Selection of type of music which should be played is also important. Only a good music selection can convert a “DESI” salon to an international one. To sum up I’ll say that for a salon any interior which is eye catchy and appealing to customer is a trend. Rahul gupta Ninthcorner Inc. www.ninthcorner.com
